A Major Dilemma

Eric has just received his college entrance exam scores. They are very good,
but not quite as high as he had hoped. Now he faces a difficult decision. With his high scores,Eric will be able to attend Eastern University,a top-ranked school and his first choice. H won't, however , beperitted to study engineering,
the major he is most interested in.
Eric could study engineering at Central University , a school with lower academic requirements.An engineering degree from Central would be less valuable in the job market. But at least after graduation be could work in the field he has alway dreamed about.

Decision 1
(Eric discusses the situation with his parent)
Eric:What do you think I should do , Dad ?

Dad:you have the opportunity to attend a great university . Should't you take it ?

Eric:But they won't let me major in engineering there , Dad. I'd have to study math.

Dad:But adegree from Eastern-any degree-is a very va;uable asset.

Mon:If you do well in the math porogram , Eri , perhaps youcan switch into engineering later.

Eric:Perhaps,but what if I can't ? I've spent years studying so many irrelevant thing in high school.I'd hate to waste four more years at university doing the same thing .

Dad:Wait,now , Math is very useful sunject to study if you're interested in engineering .

Eric:Maybe you're right . OK , I'll study math at Eastern.

Eastern-any degree-is

Decision 2

Mon:Maybe we're too concerned about university rank and prestuge . An enginnering degree is an engineering degeree , right ? Who cares where it was earned?

Eric:Yeah.Who cares?

Dad: Don't kid yourselves Employers care very much .the best companies want only the best graduates from the best universities.

Eric:I just want to be an engineer , dad , I do't have to be at the top . I'd be content with a job at an "average" company.

Dad:That's easy to say now . Later , though , you may regret setting for second-best.

Mom:Honey , we shouldn't try to force him into the decision we want him to make .

Dad: I'm sorry . I just want the best for him .

Eric:Since you're letting me choose , I choose Central . I'll be an engineer-even if I'm not the "best od the best"

Decision 3

Eric:It just doesn't seem fair that I have to make this kind of choice .

Dad:Well , get used to it . That's the eay life is sometimes.

Mom: There is one other way to approach the situation.

Eric:What's that?

Mom:You could take the college entrance exam again next year . If you study hard between now and then ,
you'll get better scores.

Dad:Then you might be able to study engineering at Eastern University after all.

Eric:I just don't know if I can take anothr whole year of studying for the exam . It's torture!

Dad:But so is going through life sorry you hadn't achieved everything you were capable of.

Eric:Yeah , I see what you're saying . OK , I'll do it.

Mom:Wonderful ! The best part is , you'll be with us for another year before going away to university.

全沒了.....真累
